Police forces across India have begun using Artificial Intelligence to improve investigation and surveillance. These tools are primarily used to assist human officers, not to replace decision-making or legal judgment.
One common use of AI is facial recognition technology, which helps police match CCTV footage with existing databases to identify suspects. AI is also used to analyse call data records, vehicle number plates, and large volumes of digital evidence more efficiently than manual methods.
AI tools are further used in predictive policing, where data is analysed to identify crime-prone areas or patterns. This helps police deploy resources better and respond faster. Some systems also assist in crowd monitoring and traffic management using video analytics.
However, the law draws clear limits. AI use must respect fundamental rights, especially the right to privacy and personal liberty. Police cannot rely solely on AI outputs to arrest or punish someone. Human verification, legal procedure, and judicial oversight remain mandatory.
Courts have emphasised that AI tools are only supporting mechanisms. Decisions affecting liberty must be based on evidence, due process, and human judgment. This balance ensures that technology enhances policing without undermining constitutional safeguards.
