Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept in the Indian judicial system. Courts in India have already begun using AI-based tools to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and manage the growing volume of cases, while keeping final decision-making in human hands.

One major area of AI use is case management. Under the e-Courts project, AI tools help in listing cases, tracking pendency, and allocating matters more efficiently. This reduces administrative burden and allows judges to focus more on adjudication rather than paperwork.

AI is also being used for legal research and translation. Courts use AI-powered systems to quickly search precedents, statutes, and past judgments. Translation tools assist in converting judgments and legal documents into regional languages, improving accessibility for litigants.

Another important use is speech-to-text transcription. Some courts have started using AI to transcribe court proceedings in real time, creating accurate records and saving time for court staff and judges.

AI tools are additionally used for data analysis, such as identifying patterns in case disposal and pendency. However, AI does not decide cases. Judicial reasoning, discretion, and interpretation remain strictly with human judges.

Overall, AI in Indian courts functions as a support system, enhancing speed and consistency while preserving the core principles of justice and due process.
